Top 10 Best Universities in Canada (2019)

Canada, a hub of universities with many falling under the World’s best category, is one preferred destination for overseas education. Most importantly, it is relatively inexpensive, involves a simple application process, and provides with more opportunities for PR. That is to say, studying in a Canadian university is like icing on the cake.

So, here I am putting in place a list of the top 10 best universities in Canada in 2019. This catalog is based on the QS World University Rankings. We have tried to reflect the university’s facilities, locations, campuses, and last but not least, its performance.

University of Toronto

Founded in 1827, University of Toronto bags the first place in our list, with it scoring a World Rank of 28. The most prestigious university of Canada boasts of offering over 700 undergraduate degrees and around 200 master’s and doctoral programs. One of the world’s top research-universities, driven to invent and innovate, it is located on the grounds that surround Queen’s Park, Toronto (Ontario).

The U of T has three campuses, Downtown Toronto (St. George), Mississauga (in the West) and Scarborough (in the East). In addition, U of T is ranked among the top schools in the world for finding a job after graduation.

McGill University

With the highest percentage of students coming in for doctorate program, McGill University stands at the World Rank of 33. Boasting of around 50 research centers, it is recorded to enroll over 40,000 students from around 150 countries across the world every year. Founded in 1821, it offers degrees in more than 300 areas of study. Located at the foot of Mount Royal in downtown Montreal (Quebec), it founded the nation’s first faculty of Medicine in 1829.

Moreover, the oldest university in Montreal, it has the invention of modern American football, hockey, and basketball to its credit. A member of Association of American Universities since 1926, it has its second campus, the MacDonald Campus located in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, 30 kilometers west of the main campus.

Based in Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, the University of Alberta is the fourth highest-ranked Canadian Institution at the World Rank of 109. Spread over five campuses including the main North Campus, South Campus, Campus Saint-Jean, Augustana Campus, and Enterprise Square, it enrolls around 40,000 students annually from 150 countries across the world. A public research university situated in Hamilton (Ontario), McMaster is named after William McMaster, a prominent Canadian senator and banker who donated $900,000 to found the institution in 1887. Well-regarded for its medical school, it currently holds the rank of 146 in the world in 2019. Home to around 30,000 students, the institution lays emphasis on enhancement of knowledge particularly in research subjects through innovative approach to teaching and learning. Established in 1956, it is one of the younger best universities of Canada. With the World Rank of 163, it also holds the title of Canada’s topmost innovative university for the past 25 years. The University of Western Ontario

Ranked globally at 214, also known as Western University, this institute certainly marks a place in our list of best universities. With the main campus located at London (Ontario) mainly surrounded by residential neighborhoods, the eastern portion is bisected by the Thames River. Renowned for its most modern research facilities and breakthrough discoveries, the university was founded in 1878. The Western University has three affiliated university colleges and offers more than 400 undergraduate and 88 graduate degree programs to over 38,000 students every year.

Founded in 1966, the next-generation research oriented institution currently holds the World Rank of 229. Located in the foothills of Canada’s snow-capped Rocky Mountains, the university boasts of having eight libraries spread at different locations.

Queen’s University

At the World Rank of 239, Queen’s University stands at the 10th place among the best universities of Canada. Founded in 1841, one of the oldest Canadian universities, it boasts of graduating 2015 Nobel Prize Winner, Dr. Arthur B. McDonald. The 4th top medical-doctoral university in Canada, it has made some remarkable discoveries in particularly in Cancer research. Renowned for its 175 year old tradition, academic excellence, and beautiful waterfront campus made of limestone buildings.

In addition, located in the large town of Kingston (Ontario), on the shores of Lake Ontario, it is home to around 22,000 students from more than 100 different countries across the world. Offering 125 undergraduate and graduate programs, the university has old buildings like the Summer Hill from 1839 to the latest  Mitchell Hall, which opened in 2018.
